1. Museums & Historical Sites

History Museum of Rila Monastery (Google Maps LINK)  

Estimated time: 25-35 min.

What to expect: A collection of precious church items, medieval manuscripts, artefacts, one of the first printing presses in Bulgaria, religious icons, and medieval books.

Main highlight:. Rafael’s Cross – an unmatched miniature woodcarving masterpiece, completed by a monk for no less than 12 years of intense and precise work. Tragically, he lost his eyesight while completing the task in 1802. Over 600 biblical figures (each figure’s face is unique) are carved in the cross. 

  • Price: adult – 8 BGN (~ 4 EUR), child/student – 2 BGN, family – adult 4 BGN, child 2 BGN

Museum ‘’Economy of the Monastery’’ (Google Maps LINK with tourist experience rating)

Time: 15-20 min.

What to expect: A collection of appliances for logging and beekeeping, an old mill, the monastery’s kitchen and bakery. 

Main highlight: The monastery kitchen is the most captivating part of the museum! It is an architectural marvel in its own right. It features an uncommonly large, cone-shaped smokestack, rising about 22 meters (72 feet) high. This was designed to vent smoke from the huge cauldrons below, where meals were prepared for hundreds of monks and pilgrims

  • Price: adult – 4 BGN (~ 2 EUR), child/student – 2 BGN, family – adult 3 BGN, child 2 BGN

Ethnographic Museum & Guest Rooms (purchase tickets from the History Museum)

Estimated time: 20-25 min.

What to expect: The exhibition showcases traditional Bulgarian Revival Period household items, textiles (carpets, woven goods), jewellery, and national costumes from various ethnographic regions.

Main highlight: These fascinating rooms are furnished in the style of different Bulgarian towns (e.g., Koprivshtitsa, Teteven), demonstrating how the monastery served as a vital inn and cultural hub for pilgrims, merchants, and patriots during the National Revival. 

Pro tip: Tickets can be purchased at the History Museum cash desk. The guest rooms are on the second floor, from where you will have an amazing view of the monastic complex.

Hreloy’s Tower (Google Maps LINK)

Time: 15-20 min.

What to expect: This is the monastery’s oldest surviving structure (14th century), a 5-story building (23 m / 75 feet high) used for defense. You can explore its interior and climb the stairs to the top floor. 

Main highlight: The fifth floor is a chapel with vibrant medieval frescoes. The panoramic views from there are fantastic.

2. Dining Options

Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

Main Highlight: Before you leave, treat yourself to a delicious local speciality! Head to the monastery’s bakery. Here, you can try freshly made mekitsi – traditional Bulgarian fried dough, often served warm and dusted with powdered sugar.  Take a jar of Bulgarian yoghurt – a perfect fit for the mekitsi. 

Pro tip: Bring cash. One mekitsa costs one leva.

Sit-down options are available. Your guide can provide information regarding their working hours and availability, as these can vary.

Pro tip: The service may be very slow. Traventuria recommends bringing a packed lunch if you opt to explore the monastery’s museums.

3.  Beyond the Monastery

Discover the serene hermit’s cave of St. Ivan of Rila (a short hiking trip from the monastery), a sacred spot with a holy spring and a small church.

Note: proper clothing and sturdy walking shoes are essential, especially outside the summer months.
