07:00 Departure from Alexander Nevski Cathedral meeting point.

Meet us behind the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, close to a restaurant called "La Cattedrale" (LINK to the meeting point on Google Maps).
Please, arrive at the meeting point at least 10 min earlier. The bus departs at 07:00 am sharp and does NOT wait for any late passengers.

Important Information

How to dress: Veliko Tarnovo has a humid continental climate experiencing warm summers and cold, snowy winters. We strongly recommend you bring a sunhat, some sun lotion and glasses for this trip during the summertime. Shoes: We strongly recommend you to wear comfortable walking shoes as most of the streets in Veliko Tarnovo and in Arbanassi are cobbled.
Cash or card: Kindly note that paying with a card is possible at some restaurants, cafes and stores, but paying by credit/debit cards is not possible everywhere. There are lots of ATMs in Veliko Tarnovo, which accept cards, however, for your personal expenses, we recommend bringing leva in cash with you.
Food: There are many restaurants in Veliko Tarnovo and in Arbanassi.
But our recommendation is to bring your snacks § a bottle of water at least. Dining service in Bulgaria could be rather slow.

The bus departed on time. However, the bus seats were not very comfortable. Not enough room for legs. When I purchased a guided tour (extra cost), I thought that the guide will give broad explanations and descriptions of the attractions. The guide was nice but minimal. In both places we walked alone. Our tour group to the Monastery yesterday had over 70 people on a single bus. Even though the bus had two doors and enough seats, a group that size makes it nearly impossible for one guide to manage effectively, answer questions, keep everyone together at stops, or give the kind of experience that the other online reviews describe..

I don't think this reflects on the guide's ability at all. Our tour guide himself was genuinely knowledgeable, friendly, and doing his best under difficult circumstances. I think the circumstances he was working with made it hard for him to do his job well. I'd strongly encourage the Traventuria to cap group sizes, even if that means running more departures, because the quality of the experience really does change once the group gets this large.

Another area for development to get back to 5 stars would be to manage the ticket handling at Boyana Church. Each attendee paid individual admission prices at the door, but group tickets for 10 or more people qualify for a discount of 2 euro per person! See image below.

With a group our size, that discount should have applied, and it wasn't clear whether it was passed on to us or not. This is a meaningful cost difference for a group this large so more transparency is needed.

Aside from these two things, I did get real value out of the day. I saw the monastery, learned genuinely interesting history along the way, and had a good amount of time on site. I just think the company has grown past what a single guide and single bus can properly handle, and smaller groups would bring the experience closer to what current reviews promise.

The guide, Veli, spoke perfect Italian and was excellent: she gave us very clear and engaging explanations, not only about the monuments we visited but also about Bulgarian history and culture. This put what we saw into context, allowing us to remember much more. Veli also gave us honest advice on which museums were worthwhile and which weren't. She also provided us with lots of practical information about taxis, transportation, the airport, etc.

The driver was also excellent at navigating the narrow mountain roads.

A well-organized tour and worthwhile.

The visit to St. John's Cave involves a 20-minute uphill hike through the woods. It's not too strenuous, but it's a good idea to bring comfortable shoes. Veli was very good at informing everyone about every aspect so they could decide what to experience.

The Rila Monastery is absolutely worth visiting and was the highlight of the tour. It's a beautiful place, and we're glad we went.

That said, I'm not sure I would book with this company again. Our guide may simply have struggled to express himself in English, but he often came across as condescending and dismissive when answering questions. It wasn't just our impression, and it made people less comfortable asking for information during the tour.

My main concern, however, was the driving. On the final stretch to the monastery, the bus was travelling at close to 60 km/h on winding mountain roads with posted speed limits of 40 km/h. For a bus full of passengers, this felt unnecessarily fast and made the journey uncomfortable. Safety should always come first.

The destination itself is fantastic, but the overall experience with the tour company fell short because of these issues.

I initially thought there would be a ticket booth, so I went to check the afternoon before, but there wasn't. The only options are to check online or before arriving at the tour bus stop that morning to see which booth has tickets available on the spot. The waiting area didn't seem to be marked; you have to rely on seeing some tour buses and groups of tourists before departure to determine where to buy tickets.

A wonderful trip! I recommend it to anyone who loves the mountains. Be sure to read the organizer's instructions carefully, as the route and conditions are truly demanding, but definitely worth the experience. I feel unsatisfied because I didn't manage to visit all the lakes. The guide's allotted time of 5 hours for a solo hike is, in my opinion, definitely not enough; I'd love to spend more time there. I'll definitely return in the future, but for a full day of hiking.

We signed up for this tour on a whim, but it ended up being our favorite trip in Bulgaria. The monastery is stunning and the second most beautiful Orthodox Church I've ever been to. Lubomir was a friendly, informative guide. I will admit that the hike was a little more than I was expecting as someone who's more outside-y than outdoorsy, but I was able to keep up. People who do any level of hiking regularly will think this was laughably easy, I'm sure. Squeezing through the passage was a bit scary, but it was fun to get outside my comfort zone. Highly recommend.

A wonderful day, enhanced by the visit to the cave. Reading the reviews, I was hesitant about doing it, but if you're a bit athletic, go for it...not so much for the cave itself (I also loved it) but especially for the beautiful path (uphill) through the woods...a marvel of intense green! At the end of the path, there's a small church. Everything went well; the guide waited for those who were slower and explained a lot both on the way and on site. I paid the guide in cash for the ticket to Bojana, who then bought tickets for everyone.
I recommend following this procedure...those who tried to buy tickets on site weren't able to get in. Eight people enter at a time, for a few minutes, just enough to take in the masterpieces. And the guide takes care of everything ;))
Bring coins for the Rila toilets.

Boyana Church and Rila Monastery are must-sees, and the allotted time is just right.
Our guide, Liubomir, was excellent; his explanations were very clear and thorough. He has a great sense of humor 😁 and is very punctual and attentive to practical details. Only one thing he forgot! A reminder that seatbelts are mandatory on buses 😉.
The bus was comfortable, and the driver was smooth. A nice bonus: the three stops on the return trip were much appreciated at the end of a long day.
In short, I highly recommend it!

We did two tours (one to Plodvid and the other to the monastery). Both places are well worth visiting. The tours are well organized. On both occasions, we had Ani as our guide. She's a very good guide.

On the second tour (to the monastery), there were some organizational problems, but these were mainly caused by tourists who don't read what they're paying for. The company sends very detailed emails with plenty of information for tourists. You have to read them carefully and in advance. This avoids surprises and allows the itinerary to proceed smoothly without any setbacks or misunderstandings.

Originally we had booked 7 rila lakes hike. But due to unfavourable weather conditions, that got cancelled. We were mentally devastated but then we got suggestions for Rila monastery, boyana church and st ivan's cave trip.

And it turned out great! The view to the destination was mesmerizing. The guide, Levislava, was super helpful and gave us a lot of information. She was super friendly as well.

I took a full-day coach trip to Rila Monastery and Boyana Church. Our guide was Lubo; he was very friendly, attentive, and professional, which made the trip fantastic. He told stories beautifully and has a great knowledge of history. Tank you Lubo. Both Boyana and Rila amazed me and exceeded my expectations. In Boyana, we had to wait quite a while to get in, since access is strictly limited to small groups for short visits, but its was worth its. Great tour to Rila Monastery. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Bus very was comfy (although USB chargers broken). Only point to note is the bus has groups who picked different combinations of sites - which was fine for is as we hiked to st Ivan's cave - but we did have to do one stop that we didn't book and wait 45 min while they did that. Not really much of a problem as the countryside is beautiful and there were coffee shops etc. overall I would recommend, we has a great day. I would 100% include St Ivans cave, it was the best part for us.

The monastery is very nice to visit, worth the trip from Sofia.

Traventuria I do not recommend. We booked the monastery and Ivan cave, supposedly with a duration of 8 hours. During the trip it became clear that they combined multiple tours so on the way back we also stopped at the sand pyramids which we had no interest in so we were stranded in a small village for 2 hours. With some delays we were back in Sofia at 18:30 nearly missing our evening reservations.

The guide knew his historical stuff but started walking the moment he got out of the bus so no chance to ask him anything before the walking parts of the tour.

On this tour, we visited Boyana Church and Rila Monastery; there was also the option to visit Ivan's Cave, but we chose not to.
Despite the large group, the organization was impeccable, and this didn't pose any problems. The meeting point was very convenient and central, and our guide, Velislava, was truly excellent: engaging, knowledgeable, and always available. She told us lots of useful facts, not only about the places we visited, but also about the city of Sofia and life in Bulgaria in general. She also spoke very fluent Italian, which pleasantly surprised us.
It was a truly enjoyable day. At Rila Monastery, we even found snow, which is quite unusual for this time of year, which made the atmosphere even more evocative. The places we visited were very beautiful, especially Rila Monastery, which truly impressed us. Boyana Church, on the other hand, was less impressive, probably because we Italians are accustomed to seeing so many frescoes of this type.
Overall, a highly recommended experience.

We enjoyed our trip to the Rila Monastery but we did not enjoy the Boyana Church visit which was also included.
Our guide Lubo was excellent and the trip ran on time. The guide spoke in fluent English and gave an excellent overview of Bulgarian history on the way to Rila. He also gave clear instructions and advice for our visits.
The Rila Monastery is beautiful, the scenery is magnificent, and we were lucky to have fabulous weather. The church is covered in beautiful and entertaining art. Our only complaint is that the toilet facilities are inadequate. For the men, the toilet is a hole in the floor. You have to pay 50 cents exact change cash to use it, and there is no convenient place to get 50 cent coins to operate the toilets.
The Boyana Church also has inadequate toilet facilities but they are free. The tour only allowed for 30 minutes at Boyana but we had to queue for 15 minutes to use the toilet. To enter the church you have to pay 6 Euro and are allowed only 6 minutes inside.
There was a side trip to a world exhibition of bells which we enjoyed very much.

They combined (for numbers, I assume) two excursions into one but it didn't impact the program that much.
At the monastery there are 4 museums: for museum lovers there wouldn't have been time to visit them all... perhaps staying an hour more would have allowed us to optimize the time to see the museums or to take a walk: the monastery and the surrounding areas are worth it.
If possible, avoid Sundays because of the crowds.

Well the site is great, but what made it so great was the tour guide Hristo Manov and the bus driver ofcourse peter, hristo is very informative and great company. The best thing is that we agreed that bacteria needed to make yougart is not bulgarian 😀
