MARIA MANEVA is a professional tour guide with many years of experience. She is a graduate of Sofia University, majoring in Geography of Tourism. She presents the natural phenomena and cultural and historical landmarks of Bulgaria in an interesting and engaging way. She knows how to listen, not just talk.

If you are interested in visiting the Belogradchik rocks or other exciting destinations, drop us a line.

What’s your personal ritual before starting this tour—anything small you always do to “get in the zone”?

I love looking through my photo collection. The happy faces and shining eyes of my guests are so inspiring!

There’s a lot of legend surrounding the Belogradchik Rocks—do you have a personal favorite? And do you ever “adjust” the story depending on the group?

😉

I like the legend of the Madonna – a romantic story of impossible love! I try not to change the original. Each guest can show their own creativity and imagination.

If Belogradchik Fortress could talk, what kind of character would it be? And what do you think it would say to the people who visit it today?

The fortress has witnessed countless fierce battles. If it could speak, it would say: Stop the fighting, protect life, it is given only once!

Is there a detail that you always hope people will remember long after the tour is over/ take home with them?

The fortress was built among the rocks, and they were a creation of natural forces. I would like the guests to feel the majesty of the nature and to take with them a piece of the magnificent panorama from the top.

Is there a local dish or drink in the area that you suggest guests try? What makes it special?

In the summer it is often very warm! I recommend the local beer “Belogradchik” – green label!

Venetsa Cave has that dramatic artificial lighting—do you think it helps people connect with the place, or do you ever feel it distracts from its natural beauty?

Artistic lighting adds to the charm of the cave formations. It adds mystery and a sense of celebration!

Do you remember a moment when a guest completely changed the energy of the group—for better or for worse?

In one group there were guests who were afraid of the cave. Then a boy with an angelic voice sang a gentle romantic song and relieved the tension! I am grateful to such guests who are happy to help the tour guide!

Let’s flip the script: if you were the guest on this tour, what moment would you be most looking forward to?

To reach the top of the cliffs and to look down on the valley! The feeling is stunning! You want to follow the birds!
